Former Aberdeen player Kari Arnason has hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo, following the Real Madrid man’s scathing attack on Iceland. After his Portuguese side were held to a 1-1 draw last night, Ronaldo accused minnows Iceland of showing no ambition, claiming their celebrations at securing a draw showed a “small mentality”. And defender Arnason, who was a regular at Pittodrie during the 2011/12 season, has hit back in spectacular fashion.
Speaking about Ronaldo, he said: “It makes it even sweeter when he’s a sore loser like that. He can say whatever he wants. He didn’t really get a chance. He got one and he couldn’t put it away.
“What can I say? Sore loser. Tough shit. What does he expect – for us to play like Barcelona against him? He fannies about and dives around.”
Arnason, who was part of the Malmo side that dumped Celtic out of Europe at the beginning of last season, also added that Ronaldo’s attitude is the reason the world prefers Lionel Messi.
“Obviously we’re not going to create as much chances as a fantastic team like Portugal but his comments are the reason why Messi is always going to be one step ahead of him. You wouldn’t expect Messi to say that. It shows we got under his skin. It was lovely to hear that.”
Ronaldo may have won three Ballon D’Ors and three Champions Leagues compared to Arnason’s League One Play-off winner’s medal which he won with Rotherham, but we are with the Icelander on this occasion. No one likes a sore loser, Cristiano.
