Scottish clubs learn European fate

The draw for the third rounds of the Champions League and Europa League qualifiers have been made.

Aberdeen, Celtic, Hearts and Hibs all learned who they will face in the third qualifying round of their respective tournaments if they get through their second qualifying rounds first.

Celtic will face either Astana or Zalgiris Vilnius in the third qualifying round of the Champions League if they defeat Red Imps. Astana of Kazakhstan and Vilnius of Lithuania drew 0-0 in the first leg, with the return leg taking place in Lithuania on Tuesday.

Aberdeen has been drawn to face either Maribor of Slovenia or Levski Sofia of Bulgaria. The teams drew 0-0 last night in Slovenia. Maribor dumped Celtic out of the Champions League two years, winning 2-1 on aggregate.

Hearts could face FC Krasnodar of Russia if they win their second qualifying tie. They defeated Motherwell 3-0 on aggregate three years ago in the Europa League.

While Hibs will face Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin if they overcome Brondby. The German side defeated Aberdeen in the then UEFA Cup in 2002.

Aberdeen are best placed to progress after defeating Latvian side FK Ventspils 3-0 at Pittodrie last night, while Robbie Neilson is confident his Hearts side can progress after they drew 0-0 with Maltese side Birkirkara F.C.

However, Celtic and Hibs both have work to do. The Hoops were on the end of a shock 1-0 defeat to Gilbritian side Lincoln Red Imps on Tuesday, but should still be favourites to progress. While Hibs have it all to do after they were defeated by a goal to nil against Danish side Brondby at Easter Road.
