News at 9: Stubbs returns north to pinch midfielder and Hearts signing is Bjorn in the USA!

STUBBS NABS VAULKS: Alan Stubbs has shown he’s not one to hold a grudge, by snapping up one of the players who was instrumental in knocking his Hibs team out at the Premiership play-off stage. 22-year-old versatile midfielder Will Vaulks has attracted interest from a number of clubs but it is Rotherham who have agreed on a deal. His departure is another blow for Peter Houston after he lost another young midfielder Blair Alston who left for St Johnstone. However…

BAIRNS ROPE IN RANKIN: Falkirk have signed John Rankin who was a free agent after leaving Dundee United. The 33-year-old was rank-rotten (apologies) for much of last season like most of his team-mates but he is an experienced campaigner and will definitely have a lot to offer in the Championship.

“ANNAN ATHLETICO”: Rival fans weren’t going to put up with Rangers’ supporters laughing at Hibs and Hearts’ European failures…

BJORN TO BE A JAMBO: After last night’s disastrous defeat to F.K Birkirkara in the Europa League, the Tynecastle club have announced the signing of USA-born striker Bjorn Johnsen. The 24-year old’s last club had been with Bulgarian club Litex Lovech and has played in Norway, Portugal and Spain. He becomes the fifth striker to join the Edinburgh side this summer following the arrivals of Connor Sammon, Robbie Muirhead, Tony Watt and Nikolay Todorov.

WINDASS GETS OF THE MARK FOR GERS: Josh Windass enjoyed a classy debut against Motherwell at the weekend and he has got off the mark tonight against the mighty Lowland League side East Stirlingshire. The son of former Aberdeen striker Dean Windass, Josh signed a pre-contract with Rangers in January. The 22-year-old had a goal disallowed after a few minutes but only had to wait a further half hour before grabbing his first goal.

THEY SAID…

“We expected that. It did not surprise me nor my team because we know how we work. Hearts played simply, with long balls, and we read how they played. For our team it is very important that every player on the pitch gives their maximum, but we were lucky. It is a big success.” (Birkirkara head coach, Drazen Besek, after his side pulled off a major European shock)

“Hopefully this is the start of a new dawn for St Mirren and we can start moving forward again. We want to build a future that involves the fans and everybody in Paisley.

“Together, we can take the club forward and make it successful again.” (Gordon Scott, who has today taken over St Mirren with 1,300 supporters, as the Buddies become the latest club to move towards fan ownership)
