Betfred Cup round-up: Holders out as Inverness thrash Pars

It was a night of high drama, high scoring and shocks as the Betfred Cup group stage nears its conclusion. Ross County became the first big name casualty of the newly revamped tournament, Inverness hit five goals past Championship side Dunfermline and Peterhead pulled off a superb win over Dundee.

Only four months after the greatest moment in their club’s history, Ross County are out of the Betfred Cup after suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Alloa. Strikes inside the first 10 minutes from Jordan Kirkpatrick and Jon Robertson had given the League 1 side a shock lead but County hit back with two goals in 10 minutes from Alex Schalk and Brian Graham. A Calum Waters goal 18 minutes from time gave Alloa an unexpected three points.

Inverness were the highest scorers of the evening as they navigated a potentially tricky game by thrashing Dunfermline. Iain Vigurs grabbed a perfect hat-trick as he netted with his left and right foot as well as a header. Carl Tremarco and Billy King also netted for The Highlanders while Andy Geggan grabbed what turned out to be a consolation for the hosts.

Peterhead pulled off one of the shocks of the tournament by beating Premiership side, Dundee. A Rory McAllister double, with one coming from the penalty spot, gave the Balmoor side all three points despite Greg Stewart’s late goal for the visitors. Kilmarnock came from two goals down to overcome Berwick Rangers, Rory McKenzie grabbing a late winner for the Rugby Park men.

Elsewhere, St Johnstone still top Group B despite being held to a 1-1 draw with Brechin City and losing the resulting penalty shoot-out. Andy Jackson gave the League 1 side a first-half lead before Chris Kane notched a second-half equaliser. However, it was the Glebe Park men who grabbed the bonus point, winning 4-2 on penalties. Queens Park and Airdrieonians shared six goals between them as they drew 3-3 in a pulsating game before Airdrie eventually triumphed 8-7 on penalties.
