Betfred Cup round-up: Accies survive early scare while Cove claim first win

In the third evening in a row of Betfred Cup action Hamilton came from behind to keep their hopes of making the next round alive while elsewhere it was a bad night for Angus clubs as both Montrose and Arbroath lost their respective games.

Premiership side Hamilton survived what would have been the biggest shock of the Cup so far as they came from two goals down to overcome a valiant Edinburgh City side. Two goals in two minutes from Ross Allum gave City a surprising 2-0 lead after just 20 minutes but the celebrations were short lived as goals from Ali Crawford and Alejandro D’Acol had Accies level at 2-2 with just 26 minutes gone. It wasn’t until midway through the second half that Hamilton grabbed their third through Jordan McGregor before experienced midfielder Dougie Imrie sealed the victory for the visitors from the penalty spot. The result leaves Hamilton just three points behind group leaders Ayr United with one game in hand.

It was a battle for a first win of the competition as Montrose met Cove Rangers in Group D. Surprisingly enough it was the Highland League outfit that came out on top with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Paul Hegarty’s men. Stuart Walker gave Cove the lead inside 20 minutes but it wasn’t until the second half that the home side extended their lead through Mitchel Megginson and Daniel Park. Montrose’s Betfred Cup campaign comes to an end without a victory in any of their four games.

In the evening’s other game, Cowdenbeath cruised to a 2-0 win away to fellow League Two side Arbroath thanks to first half goals from Craig Johnston and new loan signing, Nikolay Todorov.

Tonight’s results in full:

Arbroath 0-2 Cowdenbeath
Cove Rangers 3-0 Montrose
Edinburgh City 2-4 Hamilton Accies
