News @ 9: Quitongo finally gets call up & Wembley colour ‘clash’

MORE PAIN IN PINK?: Scotland have suffered plenty of defeats against England over the years and may now have to suffer the possible Wembley pain in the pink. The much-maligned pink strip will be required by the Scots after FIFA ruled that the white stripes on the home kit’s sleeves would clash with England’s traditional white.

The pink strip has drawn a mixed reaction from the public but after the confidence-sapping friendly defeats to Italy and France, plus last month’s humiliation in Slovakia, the strip is in grave danger of becoming as infamous as the **whisper it** maroon kit. That Georgia game.

Are people overreacting over a mere colour or is it slightly embarrassing for the oldest fixture in international football? Let us know what you think.

GAFFER CHANCE FOR WILSON: Former Celtic and Dundee United full-back Mark Wilson has landed his first job in management, taking over at League One side Airdrieonions. He takes the reigns from Kevin McBride, who became the Diamonds’ gaffer after manager Eddie Wolecki Black suffered a stroke in March. Airdrie currently sit fourth in the division, having returned to full-time football in the summer.

The 32-year-old Wilson has been putting in the “shop window” media graft for the past couple of seasons and was linked with the Alloa job before Jim Goodwin took over. He will be joined at the Excelsior Stadium by Gordon Dalziel, who has been named the Director of Football.

QUITONGO EARNS OVERDUE CALL UP: Morton youngster Jai Quitongo has finally been called up to the Scotland Under-21 side after impressing at Cappielow this season. The 19-year-old has been overlooked in recent squad’s despite boss Scot Gemmill naming experimental sides, and Jai’s father Jose had hinted that his son could look to represent Portugal instead if he continued to be ignored.

Gemmill has named another experimental squad for the friendly against Slovakia; with attention now turning to the 2019 European Championship campaign after the youngsters failed to qualify for next summer’s tournament.

Quitongo, who has scored six goals this season, was watched by Crystal Palace and West Ham in Morton’s recent Betfred Cup semi-final defeat to Aberdeen.

SCOTS’ FLETCHER ‘SCARE’: There will have been a few sleepless nights at the Strachan household after Scotland striker Steven Fletcher suffered a nasty looking head knock while playing for Sheffield Wednesday.

Strachan has been widely criticised for his repeated decision to select Fletcher over goal-machine Leigh Griffiths and the boss will be pleased to learn that his favourite son should once again be fit to lead the line at Wembley next month.

THEY SAID…

“For me to play 50 times for my local team that I supported is a massive achievement and something that I’m very proud of.

“It’s a great milestone to reach and it would be even sweeter if we get the result on Tuesday night and we can really kick-start our season.” (St Mirren keeper Jamie Langfield is hoping they can finally get their first win as they face Morton tomorrow night)
